How to See Who My Ex Is Dating Now on Instagram (Without Being Seen) — 2026

Public accounts only · They won't be notified

Short version: your ex's public following list, sorted by recency, is the fastest signal Instagram exposes about their post-breakup life. Mutual follows with a new person — especially ones that mutual-follow back within a day — are often the earliest marker of a real-world connection. Everything else (DMs, story views, saved posts) is either private or notified.

Check their recent follows silently. Open the public follower tracker → — no login, no notification, free to start.

What Instagram Exposes About a Breakup Timeline

If you're trying to piece together who your ex is spending time with now, Instagram makes it harder than most people realize. The Following list is public on public accounts — but sorted by algorithmic familiarity, not by when the follow happened. That means their newest connections are often buried under old ones.

Here's what's actually visible:

SignalPublicly visible?Practical use
Everyone they currently follow✅ Yes (public account)Native Following tab
The 20 most recent follows in order✅ Yes, via toolThe single highest-value signal for "who's new in their life"
Mutual follows with a specific person✅ YesCompare their following to that person's followers
Story views❌ NoOnly visible to the poster
DMs, saves, blocks❌ NoPrivate
Their location❌ NoNot exposed
Whether they viewed your profile❌ NoInstagram has no "who viewed my profile" feature

The recoverable signal — recent follows and their mutuality — is enough to answer "are they seeing someone new" more often than not.

The Fastest Read: Recent-20 + Mutual Check

Step 1: Pull their recent follows.

Open raventracker.com, paste their public username, hit Reveal. The 20 most recent follows appear at the top, in order.

Step 2: Scan for someone new.

Look for an account that:

  • You don't recognize
  • Was followed recently (top of the list)
  • Has a real posting history (not a burner)

Step 3: Check mutuality.

Open that person's profile. Is your ex in their following list, too? A mutual follow that happened recently is the strongest public marker of a real connection on Instagram. One-way follows can mean anything (celebrity, one-off tap, mutual friend). Mutual follows are more considered.

Step 4: Look for cross-signals.

Over the next 2–3 weeks:

  • Story tags on your ex's public stories (visible from a logged-out browser)
  • Comments on each other's posts
  • Photos where both appear

None of these are proof by themselves. Together they form a pattern.

Why the Native Instagram App Buries the Answer

The Following list you see when you tap "Following" on their profile is sorted algorithmically — by who Instagram thinks you are most likely to recognize, not by when your ex actually followed each person. That means:

  • Someone they followed 4 years ago (their college roommate) can appear before someone they followed yesterday (a new partner).
  • Their most recent follows can be on page 15 of the list.
  • Scrolling manually to find recent follows takes 20+ minutes on an active account.

The re-sorted list is not new data — it's the same public data, reordered so recency is at the top.

What "Dating" Looks Like on Instagram (In Order of Certainty)

Ranked from weakest to strongest public signal:

1. One-way follow of someone new. Very weak. Instagram pushes suggested profiles at everyone. A tap doesn't mean much.

2. Mutual follow with a new person. Meaningful. Instagram mutual-follows usually happen after some real-world interaction.

3. Multiple mutual follows into one person's social circle. Strong. If your ex just followed the new person, their sister, and two of their friends — that's not random discovery.

4. Story tags of each other. Strong. Tags are public on public stories and are more deliberate than follows.

5. Comments and public replies on each other's posts. Very strong. Public affection.

6. Posts featuring both. Confirmation.

You can read levels 1–3 without them ever knowing. Levels 4–6 are already public — you're not "discovering" them, you're reading published information.

What You Cannot See — And Why It's Fine

You cannot see:

  • Their DMs (private on every account)
  • Their story views (only visible to the poster)
  • What posts they've saved (private)
  • Whether they've looked at your profile (Instagram has never exposed this)
  • Their location

If your question is genuinely "am I still on their mind" — Instagram won't answer that. The best you can do with public data is watch for patterns of new connections. That answer is either "someone new is in their life" or "the recent follows look normal." Nothing beyond that is honestly recoverable.

Set a Time Limit

The tool is designed to answer a specific question in under a minute. If you find yourself running the same check daily, the tool is not the problem — the pattern is. Give yourself a check cadence (once a week is more than enough for post-breakup pattern reading), and hold to it.

For the ongoing-monitoring workflow, is my ex still watching my Instagram covers the reverse question with the same public-data method.

FAQ

Can I see who my ex is dating without them knowing?

Yes — through public data. Recent follows, mutual follows, and public story tags are the signals. Story views are notified, so do not view their stories if you want to stay invisible.

What if their account is now private?

You cannot see private following lists. That's the hard limit.

Can I see their DMs?

No. DMs are private on every Instagram account.

How reliable is the "mutual follow" signal?

More reliable than one-way follows, less reliable than story tags or public comments. Use it as an early indicator, not proof.

Will they know I looked at their profile?

No. Instagram has never had a "who viewed my profile" feature. Reads are silent. Story views are notified — the only thing to avoid.
